Presentation Title:‘ Preventing Suicide in Health care settings – Yes we can’

    Presentation Synopsis:

The presentation will examine the important issue of suicide in healthcare settings, spanning Primary care, General Hospitals & Mental health services but also Nursing Homes and outpatient settings. Health care staff are also at higher risk of suicide, but accessing help presents specific challenges.  Emerging data and understanding from local and international studies and reports is considered. Examples of successful initiatives to significantly suicide deaths in locations abroad will be discussed which challenge the fatalism and complacency sometimes expressed. Some proposals as to how these lessons may apply to a prevention programme across healthcare settings here will  follow. The objective is to highlight the growing concern and knowledge of significantly preventable deaths to a general health care audience and seed discussion and interest to become more engaged in vitally important work.
